Sull’insegna d’un’osteria posta all’estremità dell’unica strada che
taglia in due il paesello d’Albese, c’è dipinto a mezza figura un san
Carlo, tanto brutto che le contadine, pel bene della razza, passano di
là senza guardarlo; un san Carlo vestito di rosso, colle mani giunte,
in atto di chi prega..... i passeggieri ad entrare, come soleva dire
l’oste profano.

Roberto però non aveva bisogno delle esortazioni del Borromeo:
bastavano quelle del suo stomaco. Entrò dunque nez-au-vent,
