Over een der breede, stoffige heirwegen, die heuvel op en heuvel
af de Transvaalsche wildernissen doorkruisen, reed, vroeg in den
voormiddag--het was in het jaar 1894--een eenzaam ruiter.

Hij telde, op het gezicht te zien, 32 à 33 jaar, en zijn kleeding
verraadde den Engelschman.

Zijn voorkomen was vriendelijk en welwillend; zijn gelaatstrekken
regelmatig. Er lag iets sympathieks in het gelaat van dezen Engelschman.

Op een heuvel komende, hield hij de hand voor de oogen, want de zon
brandde op het zanderige, onbeschaduwde »transportpad", en tuurde
aandachtig recht voor zich uit, naar den horizon.

Duidelijk zag hij thans, wat hij zocht; een groep hoog opgeschoten
gomboomen en een lange, rechte oprijlaan.

Tusschen die hoog opgeschoten gomboomen lag de hoeve »Vredenoord", waar
baas Dirk Kloppers woonde.
