Capite? Perchè il libro di suo figlio, che faceva la quinta, diceva
così, bisognava crederci quasi fosse Vangelo! E perchè gli scienziati ci
avevan visti dei canali in Marte, Marte (guai a non crederci!) era
abitato.

Ma quel giorno Grappanera ebbe un'idea così giudiziosa che chiaramente
dimostrava agli amici quant'erano chiù. Disse:

-- Bene. Figuriamoci dunque d'esserci noi lassù, nello stellone, a
guardar giù, alla terra, con il cannocchiale. Vi credete voi che
diremmo: -- Laggiù, in quella stella, che si chiama Terra, ci han da
essere degli uomini fatti come noi perchè ci si vedono dei canali con
gli argini? No! no! Diremmo: -- Quella cosa lunga là, cos'è? Una torre!
Quell'altra? Un campanile! Quell'altra? Il camino d'una fabbrica! --
Questi sono i segni più visibili della mano dell'uomo; questi sono i
segni che non ingannano. Ecco perchè la terra si può dire abitata. Altro
che i canali, chiù che siete!

Ma no e no: non rimasero persuasi della ragione; gli diedero
dell'ignorante a lui, povero martire!

Le invenzioni sopra tutto contribuirono ad affrettare la fine del
martirio; e tre furono i presunti miracoli che la ragione e il cuore di
Grappanera non poterono assolutamente comportare.
