Qui si riprende contatto con la vecchia coorte e si ritrovano Mostardo
e Rigaglia.

Pochi eran rimasti della vecchia coorte. I più anziani avevano finito
di banchettare e se n'eran iti alla morte, al riposo. Chiuso il
libro del dare e dell'avere come privati, se non come uomini di caldo
avvenire, avevano compiuta la traiettoria rapidamente, da quei bravi
che si eran dimostrati nel mondo, secondo le dottrine loro. Non troppe
smorfie e meno indugi. Morire bisognava; dunque fosse rapida la morte e
tranquilli coloro ai quali restavano altri anni da vivere nel bel mondo
armonioso. Dal più al meno erano stati sodisfatti nel loro legittimo
desiderio.

Bortolo Sangiovese se n'era andato una sera, dopo aver bevuto e
mangiato a gozzoviglia. Ebbe un primo avviso in casa di amici; avvertì
che un ingranaggio non agiva; notò la cosa ridendo ma rise di traverso.
La bocca non gli tornò a posto. Si era fermata in una smorfia quasi
tragica.

Gli domandarono:

— Che cosa avete?
